I'm sure you all have heard about the recent developments regarding the Bush administration's civil telephone spying terrorism surveillance program. And I'm sure there are some of you who are not in the least bit angered by it. If this is you, then keep reading. If it's not, keep reading anyway.
So I'm sure that anyone who feels competent enough to argue about this knows what the fourth amendment is, right? That's what I thought, but I was quickly proven wrong.
You see, even the president himself claims that what he is doing is legal. However, if you are even the least bit savvy with Constitutional law and the Bill of Rights, you will know that the text of the Fourth Amendment proves this to be complete and utter bullshit. Observe:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Basically, you can't be searched (or eavesdropped on) unless there is a warrant. Which is not the case with this spying program.
Then there is the typical "but it's to fight terrorism!" So what? Remember what Ben Franklin said.
So, I, like many other right-minded Americans, am pissed off at the fact that our government is pissing all over the very civil liberties it exists to protect.
That's all.
